Filipino History

The Philippines were ruled by Spain through Mexico until its independence in the year 1762 when the British troops attacked and took possession of the islands. As a result of this act, Spain took part in the Seven Year War. The British left in the year 1764 due to the Treaty of Paris, which propagated the re-establishment of Spanish rule. The Governor-General in the year 1781 was Jose Basco Y. Vargas, who founded the Economic Society Of Friends. At this time, the Philippines were directly run by the Spanish. The developments that took place in and around the country proved to be an advantage as new and innovative ideas were brought in the Philippines. The Suez Canal opened avenues for the high class Filipinos so that they could travel to Europe for further studies. The construction of the Suez Canal commenced in the year 1869, which helped the travelers save time in reaching Spain.

The Spanish-American war began in the year 1898 during which Aguinaldo was invited and was requested to return to the Philippines on May 19, 1898. This was done in the hope that Aguinaldo would represent the citizens of the Philippines against the Spanish colonial government. A few days later, Aguinaldo announced himself as the dictator. On June 12, 1898, Aguinaldo stated that the Philippines were independent. At the same time German troops arrived in Manila and announced that if the United States did not take charge of the Philippines as a colonial possession, the Germans would proceed to do so.

The islands slowly became a part of the United States and since then have been an instated territory of the U.S. In the year 1935, it was decided that the Philippines would acquire independence in the coming decade. Even though Japan attacked and occupied numerous islands during World War II, the Philippines were finally granted independence on July 4, 1946.
