Divorce to Remarriage - Blood is Thicker than the Remarriage

Remarriage preparation should always include a discussion on differences to expect in this marriage from your first marriage. Unfortunately, a lot of people are rather naive about the fact that there even will be differences. These are the people who get blindsided and become unhappy unless they can adjust their expectations quickly.

First and foremost, you need to accept the fact that in the beginning, youíre relationship with your kids will be stronger than your relationship with your partner. The key there is "in the beginning."

It makes sense doesn't it? I mean, youíve known your children, their whole lives. They are one of the most important aspects of your life. More than likely youíve only known your new partner a few years.

Because of this relationship dynamic, the marriage starts out balanced differently than a first does. You don't have that "couple time" to grow and mature in your relationship before you begin having children. Instead, you already have established relationships with your children and are bringing this new person in.

It is essential for the couple to begin shifting things so that the marriage relationship becomes the strongest. If it doesn't become so, then the entire marriage and step family will crumble.

You and your children are the "insiders", and your new partner will be viewed as an "outsider." As time goes on this should begin to change and the boundaries will become more fluid. But again, this takes time, and during that time it can be very uncomfortable for the "outsider."

It is mandatory for the couple to begin shifting things so that the marriage relationship becomes the strongest. If it doesn't become so, then the entire marriage and step family will fail.
